It's more surprising to me that Dave Grohl would accept and treat Taylor Hawkins like the brother from another mother when he was the drummer for Nirvana and Kurt Cobain was also his brother from another mother. Dave Grohl is a pretty accepting guy.

As for Will Smith, and I only saw the highlight because hell it's all over the place, and it's the fucking irrelevant Oscars, but Will Smith is a hack and has been a hack ever since the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. There's never been anything about his persona on television and in movies that I found attractive, and I have never, ever wanted to see anything that he was ever in. All this did was confirmed my feeling of over three decades.

I do agree, and it is somewhat nuanced because we do often accept the "tortured artist" trope that seems to give a lot of these musicians license to engage in destructive behavior. One thing to take note of, in the cases of Miles and Coltrane, both of them kicked, by themselves. "A Love Supreme", probably one of the most brilliant pieces of work I have ever heard was in fact a tribute to his surviving and emerging from his addiction. Others, like Parker, did not manage to overcome it and met early deaths.

About the 2011 heroin overdose and coma. I remember he almost died of alcohol poisoning in early 2000s. He had so many chances to get clean.

There are young Japanese kids who play Zepplin. Certain genres of music, performers, and performances will stand the test of time. I'd bet Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky et al, would have loved the greats of rock n roll, especially the Foo Fighters. They are virtuosos. That concert shot at Wembley Stadium is an amazing moment in music history.

I do not think they would have performed as well without the drugs. Not even close. But it's a fine line. Mostly drugs worsen performances but sometimes it just works. But then there are musicians like Tool which is pure un-drugged virtuosity of another kind. IDK. It's something that can't be quantified.

Bill Hicks talks about this topic in a comedy routine he did about drugs, music and Jimi Hendrix. It's a virtuoso performance in itself. I still love watching that bit. Classic. George Carlin talked about 'it's punch up time' for marijuana.

But I hear what Tom is saying. At that level especially, to just throw it all away, and leave a family behind. Very selfish narcissistic and cruel. Addicts destroy everyone and everything around them, and they don't really give a shit.
